Based on the Mary Stewart book entitled The Little Broomstick, former Studio Ghibli director Himoasa Yonebyashi (The Secret World of Arrietty and When Marnie was There) is directing a new animated film entitled Mary and the Witch’s Flower.
According to the Mary Sue the source material is story about:
Based on Mary Stewart’s The Little Broomstick, the story follows a young girl named Mary who follows a black cat named Tib into the woods. In Stewart’s book, she discovers a broomstick and enters Endor College–where she discovers terrible things behind the college above the clouds.
Other accounts of the story, and the trailer, mention that the girl, Mary, receives mysterious powers for just one night. What would you do if you had mysterious powers for one night? What kind of power would you like to possess?
The teaser trailer has been released and you can definitely see the Ghibli influence, which makes sense, because it’s the first film from Studio Ponoc. Studio Ponoc was founded by former Ghibli directors: Ghibli’s Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Yoshiaki Nishimura, and several former Studio Ghibli animators are now on their staff. As I watch the trailer I can definitely see similarities between this and Kiki’s Delivery Service and her appearance reminds me a bit of Ponyo. The creatures that pour out of the suits give me the feel of Howl’s Moving Castle (the book is better than the movie go read it. It’s my favorite!) One thing is for sure, I am loving the spunky red-hair, blue eyed combo.
The release date isn’t set yet. It indicates summer 2017 for Japan and just 2017 for North America.
Here is the teaser trailer
It’s nice to know the tone and style of beloved Ghibli movies will continue on! This makes me very happy indeed.
