Here’s another round of tweets on the subject of marketing, webcomics and careers in comics. The first is here.

These are my opinions, of course, but again I want to make sure any aspiring webcomics creators out there are aware of the uphill climb ahead of them. You can be successful, but need to go into this webcomics thing with your eyes wide open.

Realistic Webcomics Marketing Speak

  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: Shadowbinders gets a few hundred thousand monthly pageviews. No, we still don’t make a living off it.
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: Of the 1000s of webcomics out there, maybe 3 dozen make a living. Maybe 1 dozen of those make good $$.
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: Print comics? Not much better. The TOP Marvel/DC guys make good $$$. Most comickers just squeak by.
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: Comics are very much a labor of love. The 1% that find true financial success are few and far between.
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: It *is * possible to make a good living off of comics. Many factors involved. Like all entertainment.
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: I’m a “pro.” I spent a few years doing print comics full-time. Scary financially as jobs come and go.
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: Not trying to talk anyone out of doing comics, but it’s such a hard, long road… even for “pros.”
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: To clarify, there are lots of comics pros out there. By the 1%, I was talking more about the Jim Lees.
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: You *can* make a living in comics in 2012… yeah. Getting RICH? Well… that’s another story.
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: Follow @CBCebulski if you want to know what it’s really like to break into and work in comics as a pro
  • @JGrayWebcomic Yeah, it helps if your comic is easily accessible to a wide audience. Or about video games. lol
  • @JGrayWebcomic True again. Our ad revenue covers hosting and our own ads… and that’s about it. Books make some $, but you gotta sell ALOT.
  • @JGrayWebcomic So I guess you’d really have to define what a “successful” #webcomic is. Popular? Financially self-sufficient? Depends.
  • @JGrayWebcomic I’m always surprised at the number of known #webcomics creators who have day jobs. I’m talking popular comics, too.
  • @JGrayWebcomic That’s the reality. So many moderately successful webcomics out there. Not everyone is going to be PvP, so you gotta love it.
  • Realistic #Webcomics Marketing Speak: The always awesome Ryan Estrada dishes on his income as a web cartoonist > http://t.co/le3rxajI
